Delft, 18 June 2026 – Q*Bird is proud to be a founding consortium partner of the Quantum Communication Fieldlab Rotterdam – QCFR (QCFR), officially launched today at RDM Next, Rotterdam together with Eurofiber, Cisco, CGI, INSPIR8ION and supported by the Port of Rotterdam, Municipality of Rotterdam (Gemeente Rotterdam), InnovationQuarter and the Provincie Zuid-Holland.
During the launch, the founding consortium partners formally signed the QCFR Founding Consortium Agreement in the presence of Meindert Stolk, Regional Minister for Economy & Innovation of the Provincie Zuid-Holland, marking the official start of a collaborative initiative focused on advancing the testing, validation and operational adoption of quantum secure communications.
The fieldlab builds on operational quantum secure communication deployments already established in the Netherlands, including scalable Measurement Device Independent Quantum Key Distribution (MDI-QKD) networking, helping translate deployment experience into broader adoption.
“The future of quantum secure communications will not be defined by technology alone. It requires collaboration between technology providers, infrastructure operators, end users and public stakeholders. QCFR brings together the organisations needed to translate technology into trusted operational infrastructure!” – Dr. Ingrid Romijn, CEO and Co-Founder, Q*Bird.
“With the QCFR fieldlab, our partners in Rotterdam and across Zuid-Holland are taking the next step in quantum secure communication. Secure communication is a key issue not only for the vital operations in Europe’s busiest port, but also for critical infrastructure and government organisations in our greater region. By rolling up their sleeves in collaboration, the QCFR consortium captures a great economic opportunity and is set to make an important contribution to Europe’s security.” – Meindert Stolk, Regional Minister for Economy & Innovation of the Province of Zuid-Holland.
Building on the Rotterdam quantum communication initiatives and the QUEST project*, the fieldlab represents the next step towards a trusted, operational quantum secure infrastructure in the Netherlands and Europe.
The launch programme featured the official opening by Meindert Stolk, Regional Minister for Economy & Innovation of the Province of Zuid-Holland, followed by a panel discussion with representatives from Eurofiber, Q*Bird, CGI, Cisco and INSPIR8ION on the transition from vision to implementation. In addition, Q*Birders, Dr. Ingrid Romijn, CEO and Co-Founder, Alex Mitrov, Commercial Strategy & Partnerships Lead, Milu Sini Lal, Marketing & Communication Specialist and Jakob Pyszkowski, Senior Business Developer, were onsite showcasing a the MDI-QKD demo unit and engaging with attendees, including industry leaders, policymakers and strategic stakeholders, providing a tangible view on the operational adoption of quantum secure communication.
Huge thank you to all founding and strategic partners for making this important milestone possible. QCFR represents more than a fieldlab. It strengthens Rotterdam’s role as a leading collaborative environment for translating quantum innovation into trusted operational infrastructure, supporting Dutch and European ambitions around digital resilience, trusted connectivity and strategic autonomy!
